BACOLOD City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) considers building a bicycle and motorcycle lane in major and minor roads in the city.
The SP recently passed a resolution directing the Bacolod Traffic Authority Office, the City Planning and Development Office and the City Engineering Office to conduct a study on the proposed lane construction.
The lane is seen to lessen road accidents that injure or kill people, the resolution stated.
Traffic Management Unit (TMU) records showed that there was a 79 percent increase in the number of motorcycle-related accidents in the city from January to November this year compared to the same period last year.
TMU records further showed that 25 persons died from motorcycle-related incidents this year. Last year, there were 18.
Resolution proponent Councilor Ricardo Tan said the TMU data coincides with the increase in the number of motorcycle owners in the city – both individuals and companies.
“This simply means that despite the danger attached to driving a motorcycle on the road, persons and families – especially those who are poor and in the middle class – still continue to use motorcycles as their mode of transportation,” Tan added.
The councilor said the most practical way of minimizing accidents involving motorcycles is to provide them an exclusive lane./PN
