CONTRARY to what some people are saying, the six councilors namely Efrain Treñas, Ely Estante, Julie Baronda, Mandrie Malabor, Reyland Hervias and Liezel Joy Zulueta have not backtracked their previous stand on saying no to the renewal of the franchise of Panay Electric Company or PECO.
The latest resolution these six councilors have signed never mentioned anything or even hinted anything about reversing their stand against the renewal of PECO’s franchise as the power provider for “I Am Iloilo City.”
There’s a seventh councilor who also signed the resolution, Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo; now this guy is something else. He was the only one who did not sign that resolution saying “no” to the renewal of PECO’s franchise. Now that he signed this new resolution, does that mean he’s also against the renewal of PECO’s franchise or he’s for the renewal?
Perhaps Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo is concerned that if PECO’s franchise is not renewed “I Am Iloilo City” will be plunged to darkness, making it difficult for him to see breastfeeding mothers feed their babies with only a candle for light.
One can only admire his concern for breastfeeding mothers.
Moi has read the resolution; it is asking Congress, particularly the Legislative Committee on Franchise and Public Utilities, to resolve the issue of PECO in the renewal of its franchise for another 25 years as the power provider of “I Am Iloilo City.”
The resolution is further asking the Legislative Committee on Franchise and Public Utilities that in resolving this franchise issue, they do it in a balanced and fair manner for the best interest of everybody.
Moi could be wrong but nowhere in the resolution says that they are backtracking on their previous stand on saying “no” to the renewal of Panay Electric Company’s franchise as “I Am Iloilo City’s” power provider.
This latest resolution became viral last Thursday and caused quite a stir among the netizens with their usual comments mostly against the councilors who signed and the tone was that the six councilors backtracked their stand.
After reading the resolution, moi was quite surprised why they say that as there was nothing of that sort mentioned in the said resolution.
Which brings us to this question; which is who has been spreading the word that these six councilors rescinded on their previous stand which is no to the renewal of PECO’s franchise?
Moi actually came upon a post on Facebook by the Presidential Assistant/Consultant for Western Visayas who also happens to be a “balloon artist” Jane Javellana which says something like these six councilors who sent that new resolution to Congress has rescinded on their previous stand and that should they (the six) be labelled as “traitors.”
As it turns out after verifying and actually reading the resolution, moi “backtracked” from a previous impression that indeed these six councilors rescinded on their stand of no to PECO’s franchise renewal.
To say that these six councilors took back their word is unfair as there is no hint or mention in that said resolution that they are actually doing this. At best these six councilors are just playing safe and trying not to appear too belligerent against PECO as crazier things have happened like waking up and Leni Robredo is the Vice President.
So just in case PECO does indeed against all odds were able to renew its franchise for another 25 years, these six councilors would not appear to be the villain.
The natives of “I Am Iloilo City” are up in arms against PECO and any sensible politician would know that going against them in this issue would be committing political suicide come the next local elections.
Unless something comes up by the time this column sees print, then it would be safe to say that these six councilors are still against the renewal of Panay Electric Company or PECO’s franchise.
But then again moi could be wrong; councilors Treñas, Estante, Baronda, Malabor, Hervias and Zulueta rescinded on their no stand against PECO, the franchise was renewed for another 25 years and Councilor Eduardo Peñaredondo is happy that breastfeeding mothers will not feed their babies in the dark.
