MANILA — Brothers Carlos and Eldrew Yulo secured spots in the men’s floor exercise final of the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, with the two-time Olympic champion Carlos leading the qualifiers while also advancing in two other apparatus.
Carlos stamped his class in the floor exercise qualifications with a field-leading 14.600 points, built on a difficulty score of 5.7 and an execution mark of 8.900.
The Olympic floor exercise and vault gold medalist also booked a place in the parallel bars final after finishing sixth with 14.266 points.
Carlos likewise made the vault final despite a costly mistake in the qualifications, failing to stick the landing and falling on his first attempt.
“Sobrang challenging today. Hindi ito yung in-expect ko na preparation ko. Hindi siya lumabas talaga today. Although yung sa pommel horse okay pa naman ako. Yung sa vault hindi ko… hindi [ko] siya matanggap kanina,” he told POC Media.
Despite the uneven qualification campaign, Carlos finished 10th in the individual all-around standings with 75.465 points.
Eldrew, meanwhile, ensured that two Yulos will compete in the floor exercise final after placing fourth in the qualifications with 13.966 points.
The younger Yulo also earned a berth in the horizontal bar final despite finishing ninth with 13.433 points. He moved into the final because only two gymnasts per National Olympic Committee are allowed to qualify.
Eldrew placed eighth in the individual all-around standings with 77.264 points, finishing two spots ahead of his decorated older brother.
Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Miguel Besana added another finals berth for the Philippines after finishing fourth in the vault qualifications with 13.933 points.
Team Philippines, meanwhile, placed sixth in the men’s team event with a total score of 232.093 points./PN
