ROXAS City – All 30 barangays in Jamindan, Capiz have achieved a “zero open defecation” (ZOD) status, Mayor Mac Artur Valdemar announced.
“If we say ZOD, each household must have a comfort room with water and soap,” Valdemar told the local press.
According to the mayor, this was made possible with the help the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and A Single Drop of Safe Water (ASDSW) extended to the municipal government through the rural health unit.
In 2014 Caridad became the first barangay in Jamindan to have a ZOD-certified status, Valdemar noted.
In view of Jamindan’s intent to be declared a ZOD municipality, Provincial Health Office and Department of Health personnel verified around 1,000 households in 15 barangays last month.
Results of the verification will be released anytime soon, Valdemar told the press.
He also disclosed that UNICEF and ASDSW, in coordination with Municipal Health Officer Dr. Merriel Kapunan, will implement P5-million water, sanitation and hygiene projects from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. (PIA/PN)
