KALIBO, Aklan – Authorities securing the Ati-Atihan Festival are vigilant of anyone possessing firearms during the celebration.

Security will be tightened as Site Task Group commander Senior Superintendent Lope Manlapaz ordered an intensified campaign against loose firearms.

Officers at the Police Assistance Centers and the Pedestrian Screening Areas must strictly inspect the bags of revelers, especially backpacks, said Manlapaz.

The order came in light of the arrest of a 32-year-old man for carrying an unlicensed firearm on Jan. 16.

Joenel Ibaos of Barangay Libang, Makato town yielded a .38 revolver with three cartridge cases.

Two officers assigned at the Police Assistance Center 1 near the Kalibo-Numancia Bridge caught him at around 4:30 p.m.

Ibaos failed to present pertinent documents proving his legal ownership of the revolver, which was turned over to the provincial crime laboratory for ballistic examination.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) suspended all permits to carry firearms outside of residence for 10 days, from Jan. 12 to 21, as this capital town celebrates the “mother of all Philippine festivals.”

The gun ban will “guarantee [that] the Ati-Atihan will be free from firearm-related incidents, and ensure the safety and security of local and foreign tourists,” PNP chief Director General Ronald Dela Rosa said in a memo dated Dec. 26, 2017.

Only personnel of the PNP, Armed Forces and other law enforcement agencies performing their official duties and in agency-prescribed uniforms are allowed to carry firearms, the memo stated. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
