BACOLOD City – The Diocese of Bacolod hanged on the wall and fence of the San Sebastian Cathedral banners expressing opposition to the death penalty.

Reverend Father Felix Pasquin, cathedral rector and the diocese’s social communications head, stressed they will continue to “defend life.”

Criminals must be punished based on the current penal codes and not using capital punishment, said Pasquin.

“The church believes in giving a second chance, not in putting a person to death,” he said. “We believe in a person’s conversion by the grace of God and [rehabilitation].”

On the church’s fence, the banner had the slogan “No to the culture of death!” and the bible verse “I came that they might have life and have it to the full.”

Meanwhile the material posted on the cathedral’s wall stated, “Death penalty? No, no, no kay Berdugo! Yes, yes, yes sa kay Kristo!”

Pasquin disclosed that the diocese has included prayers against the passage of the capital punishment bill in its daily masses.

Earlier the Diocese of Bacolod’s publication, Adsum, urged legislators to reform the justice system instead of pushing for the death penalty’s revival.

Pasquin also reminded House of Representatives Majority Leader Rodolfo Fariñas — a staunch death penalty supporter — that the House should be a “deliberative body … always open to debates.”

“Congress should be open to debates and exchanges of opinion … [which are among] the main functions of the House of Representatives,” the priest said.

Debates, Pasquin stressed, allow lawmakers to reach a consensus that would benefit the public.

Fariñas (1st District, Ilocos Norte) has warned that the House leadership will terminate the debate on the death penalty bill if opponents of the measure continue questioning session attendance as a “delaying tactic.”/PN
