BACOLOD City – Four people died of dengue hemorrhagic fever in Negros Occidental and this capital city in January.
Two boys perished in Bacolod — a 10-year-old from Barangay Sum-ag and a 5-year-old from Barangay Singcang-Airport — said Dr. Grace Tan, chief of the City Health Office’s Environmental Sanitation Division.
Two deaths were also recorded in the province — one in Escalante City and another in San Carlos City — Provincial Health Office records showed.
No dengue-related deaths were recorded in Negros Occidental and Bacolod City in the same month last year.
Late consultation was a factor in the deaths, Tan said.
Some of the patients with symptoms were unable to get themselves checked due to financial constraints, she said.
When the patients get admitted to the hospital, they were already having complications, Tan pointed out.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral disease.
Increasing resistance by eating the right kind of food — especially among children — may help fight the virus, Tan said.
She advised parents and guardians to give children adequate rest, enough food and fluids, and vitamins.
Anyone with cough and cold with fever must be taken to the nearest clinic for a checkup, Tan further said.
Do not hesitate to have a second checkup if unconvinced by the results of the first, said the health official./PN
