BACOLOD City – An illegal quarry operation along Binalbagan River in Barangay 4, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental was raided. Equipment were confiscated.
The operation went beyond its allowed area of excavation, according to an initial investigation that the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office conducted.
A team, led by Moises Padilla police station chief Senior Inspector Alfredo De Leon and Moises Padilla councilor Agustin Grande III, went to the quarry site on Jan. 19.
Grande is the chairman of the Sangguniang Bayan committee on environment of Moises Padilla.
Quarry operator Wilma Villaflor of Barangay Pahanocoy, Bacolod City showed to the team a permit issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), which will expire on Dec. 17, 2018.
However, the team found that the operation, which should only be in Barangay Magallon Cadre in Moises Padilla, reached an area of Barangay 4 in Binalbagan.
Police said this is a violation of Republic Act 7942, or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995.
The Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office ordered the quarry operation to stop.
Among the confiscated equipment were five dump trucks and a backhoe./PN
