ILOILO City – Fire totally gutted 80 houses in barangays Bakhaw and Bolilao in Mandurriao district yesterday.
The blaze started around 11:30 a.m. at the house of Jona Kasigna-signa in Barangay Bolilao, according to the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
Most of the houses – many operating as boardinghouses – were made of light materials so the fire spread fast.
According t Senior Fire Officer 1 Rollin Hormina of BFP-Iloilo City, property damage reached P10 million.
The bureau counted 10 persons injured – three firefighters and seven civilians.
There were no casualties.
It took firefighters over an hour to put out the blaze. They declared the fire “under control” around 12:50 p.m.
Hormina said 30 houses were totally damaged in Barangay Bolilao and three partially damaged.
In Barangay Bakhaw, 50 houses were totally damaged and four partially damaged.
An unattended kitchen fire at the Kasigna-signa house likely caused the blaze, according to Barangay Captain Remia Gregori of Bakhaw.
She made a public appeal for help. Those displaced needed clothes and food, among others, she said.
As of this writing, the BFP was yet to come up with an estimate of the property damage.
Displaced residents were temporarily staying in the gymnasiums of barangays Bakhaw and Bolilao./PN
