ILOILO – A 21-year-old student was declared dead on arrival at the hospital following a collision between a private vehicle and a mini-bus along the national highway of Barangay San Antonio, Oton town on Sunday morning, July 6.

The fatality, identified only by the alias “Mando,” was a resident of Barangay Parara Norte, Tigbauan, and was reportedly heading home when the incident occurred. He was driving a Mitsubishi Lancer, which collided head-on with a mini-bus en route from San Joaquin to Mohon Terminal in this city.

Lieutenant Colonel Abner Jordan, chief of the Oton Municipal Police Station, said initial investigation showed that the private vehicle veered into the opposite lane, resulting in the collision. The mini-bus was driven by alias “Jay”, a 40-year-old resident of Barangay Idcadlom, San Joaquin.

Mando was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to multiple body injuries. Meanwhile, more than 10 individuals, including the mini-bus driver, sustained minor injuries.

The impact, police added, caused severe damage to both vehicles, with the Mitsubishi Lancer completely wrecked and the front section of the mini-bus heavily damaged.

Jordan confirmed that Jay was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident, while further investigation was underway to determine if Mando was sober.

As of press time, the mini-bus driver remained in the custody of the Oton police station pending the results of the investigation./PN
