ILOILO – A shootout at a sand and gravel quarry in Barangay Dilaan, Dueñas town left one man dead and three others wounded yesterday.
Romer Perez of Barangay Capuling, Dueñas died of two gunshot wounds on the chest. He was reportedly an overseer of the quarry operated by the Panaguiton family.
The shootout happened around 11 a.m., according to Senior Officer 1 Sherwin Celda of the Dueñas police station.
The three others wounded were Jennifer Labon, 44; Romy Velasco, 46; and Ramil Ramirez.
Labon and Velasco, both residents of Barangay Dilaan, were taken to the Western Visayas Medical Center in Mandurriao, Iloilo City. Ramirez of Janiuay, Iloilo was rushed to the West Visayas State University Medical Center in Jaro, Iloilo City.
Labon sustained injuries on the legs while Velasco had a gunshot wound on the left arm. Ramirez had a wound on the chest.
Velasco and Labon were guarding a private property near the quarry, said Celda, while Ramirez was an overseer of trucks tapped to haul quarry materials from the site.
Prior to the shootout, Velasco and Labon who were preparing lunch in their hut had a spat with Ramirez and Perez who came over.
It remained unclear as of this writing what the quarrel was about but according to Celda, Perez appeared to be the first one to fire a shot wounding Velasco.
Labon tried to come to Velasco’s defense but he was shot, too, said Celda.
Though wounded, Velasco managed to fire back at Perez then at Ramirez, according to the police officer.
Recovered from the crime scene were five empty shells of a .45 pistol, and an empty shell of a .9mm pistol./PN
