ILOILO – The police of Ajuy town arrested two persons for illegal fishing yesterday.
The 29-year-old Leo Maglasang of Barangay Pasil, Victorias City, Negros Occidental was taken to the Ajuy police station together with a 10-year-old boy. They were using the prohibited trawl.
The two were apprehended around 4:10 a.m. aboard F/B Angel in the waters off Kalabasa Island, Barangay Nasidman, according to Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento, Ajuy police chief.
They had another companion identified as Norio Abayan, also of Negros Occidental but this one managed to escape.
According to Sustento, Police Officer 2 Bernard Tanoy and Police Officer 1 John Cesar Bantigue towed F/B Angel using the Ajuy police patrol boat but Abayan cut the rope, leaving Maglasang and the boy who were at the police patrol boat.
The police boat chased Abayan’s fishing boat but the suspect fired a shot at the cops, said Sustento.
The policemen fired back, hitting Abayan’s boat but other fishermen came to the suspect’s rescue, according to the police chief.
The suspects would be charged with violating the fisheries code, said Sustento./PN
