BACOLOD City – Eleven of the 29 new female inmates at the Negros Occidental District Jail in Bago City tested positive for illegal drug use.

The results will be subjected to a confirmatory test, according to Jail Inspector Mar Louie Salcedo, spokesperson for the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Negros Island Region.

The new inmates were from the Metro Bacolod District Jail in Barangay Handumanan here. They were transferred after holding a noise barrage in their dormitory.

Salcedo said the Bago jail management always tests new inmates for drug use.

An initiative of the warden, Chief Inspector Ruth Estales, the testing helps them isolate drug users from non-drug-users, he said.

The 29 inmates asked the Bacolod jail management to allow their families to stay with them in the facility from Dec. 24, 2016 to Jan. 1, 2017.

But jail policy prohibits that, so their request was denied, Salcedo said.

The detainees protested the decision by holding a noise barrage from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on Dec. 20.

They also demanded that female dorm warden Jail Inspector Jean Olive Unciano be relieved./PN
