MANILA – Twelve Western Visayas-based spikers are set to strut their wares when the UAAP Season 80 women’s volleyball tournament opens today at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Last year’s runner-up Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles will have two WV-based players in rookies Candice Gequillana of Bacolod City and Ilongga Danielle Theris Ravena.
Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, on the other hand, has Negrense Bernadeth Pons of Rafael B. Lacson National High School and Ria Duremdes of Central Philippine University.
University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, meanwhile, will have Passi, Iloilo-native Shannen Palec and rookie Catherine Pollentes, who previously played for St. John’s Institute-Bacolod.
University of the Philippines Lady Maroons will also have team captain Arielle Estranero, a product of USLS-Bacolod, and Jessma Ramos, who played before for Trinity Christian School in Bacolod.
Defending champion De La Salle University Lady Spikers had Aduke Ogunsaya of Dumangas National High School, National University Lady Bulldogs had Roma Doromal of CPU-Iloilo, University of the East Lady Warriors has Ilongga Ma. Shaya Adorador and Adamson Lady Falcons had Negrense Christine Joy Soyud.
Matches on the opening day are between the Lady Bulldogs and the Lady Falcons at 2 p.m. to be followed by the matchup between the Lady Spikers and the Golden Tigresses at 4 p.m./PN
