KALIBO, Aklan – Fisherfolk in coastal barangays in Tangalan town will receive brand-new fishing boats from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).
Mayor Gary Fuentes said 120 fiberglass non-motorized boats will be turned over to fishers from the villages of Poblacion, Dumatad, Dapdap, Baybay, Afga, and Jawili on Oct. 30.
Fiberglass fishing boats are designed to withstand rough seas. Their maintenance costs less compared to that of wooden boats.
The local agricultural and fishery council identified the beneficiaries, Fuentes said.
In addition, the recipients will receive fishing paraphernalia.
The ceremonial turnover will be held at the municipal public plaza.
The distribution of fishing boats in the fifth-class municipality northeast of this capital town is part of the BFAR’s livelihood support program.
An attached agency of the Agriculture department, the BFAR is responsible for the development, improvement, management, and conservation of the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources.
The department vowed to distribute one million more fishing boats over the next five years in far-flung fishing communities. (With Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
