KALIBO, Aklan – Some say the number 13 spells bad luck.
Not in the case of the newly crowned 2017 Mutya it Kalibo Ati-Atihan.
May Juanico Adel Ahmed Salman of New Washington town bested 15 other aspirants and took the crown on Friday, Jan. 6 at the ABL Sports and Cultural Center.
Staying well on course during the preliminary rounds, the 21-year-old Filipina-Arabian — then candidate No. 13, and also the No. 13 applicant during the screening three months ago — was a crowd favorite.
At the final round’s question-and-answer portion, Salman was asked, “What is the most challenging part of the journey as Mutya it Kalibo Ati-Atihan candidate?”
“The most challenging part,” she said, “is meeting the expectations of people.”
“It has been fed in the minds that beauty queens must always be smart, poised and beautiful, but a beauty queen has a lot more than just [looking] beautiful. A true beauty queen is someone who can be an inspiration to many and of help to others, with or without the crown,” said Salman.
Aside from being the festival queen, Salman also took home the minor awards Best in Talent (spoken poetry), Best in Ati-Atihan Festival Costume and Best Ati-Atihan Festival Costume Designer.
On coronation night, the candidates were judged in four categories: Production Number, Ati-Atihan Festival Costume, Long Gown, and Swimsuit.
The 17-year-old Filipina-Italian Eleonora Valentina Laorenza, also from New Washington, was first runner-up. She also grabbed the Pioneer’s Choice and Save More corporate awards and the minor award Miss Photogenic.
Second runner-up was Jazzine Mae Andres, 15, of Altavas, while third runner-up Gillian Christine Bartolome, 19, from this capital town took home Best in Swimsuit and Best in Long Gown, and City Mall Choice and Coca-Cola corporate awards.
Fourth runner-up Khadine Kaye Hontiveros, 25, from Nabas was also chosen Miss Petron.
Other corporate awards went to Harriette Panagsagan (Miss AirAsia), Ma. Andrea Paula Gabay (Miss Ocean View Resort), Camille Fate Santos (Miss Globe), and Kimberly Joy Dalida (Miss Talk ’n’ Text Texter’s Choice). Panagsagan also won Best in Production Number.
Other candidates were Eirene Mae Cuare, Honey Christy Bandiola, Janelyn Salido, Theodora Elizabeth Laorenza, Rose Fuerte, Cleorodizel Baruela, and Rosebella Arbon. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
