ILOILO City – The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) supports the Police Regional Office 6’s (PRO-6) proposal for a gun ban when this city hosts several meetings related to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) Summit this March.
The SP passed a resolution expressing this upon the request of the PRO-6, said Councilor Jeffrey Ganzon, chairperson of the committee on police matters.
The PRO-6 will be submitting the resolution to the Philippine National Police to ensure the approval of the proposed suspension of the permit to carry firearms outside of residence (PTCFOR) in this city.
The Philippines is this year’s host of the Asean Summit. Five related meetings will be held in this city from March 5 to 17.
PRO-6 wants to impose a gun ban from March 3 to 18 as one of the security measures.
This will be the third time the country is hosting the regional meet. It was held in Manila in 1987 under President Corazon Aquino and in Cebu in 2007 under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
The bloc’s chairmanship rotates annually among the 10 member-states – Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
