AS PART of the annual Dinagyang Festival, the Iloilo City Sports Council prepared various events for Ilonggo sports fans for the entire January.
Many of the 16 sporting events spread out from Jan. 13 to 28 were geared toward the development of the youth, according to Moises Salomon of the city government’s Sports Development Division.
“Tournaments will cater to youth, elite and professional athletes as part of our commitment to help develop Ilonggos with the potential to compete in Olympics,” Salomon said.
The Iloilo Invitational 17-and-Under Boys Basketball Championship and the Iloilo Mayor’s Cup Battle of Champions (high school division) will be held from Jan. 12 to 14 at Hua Siong gym.
PBA returns to the University of San Agustin gym on Jan. 13 with the Philippine Cup match between San Miguel Beermen and TNT KaTropa.
The 4th Mr. Dinagyang Physique and Bodybuilding Competition will be held the following day at Robinsons Place mall in City Proper.
The Dinagyang Billiards Tournament will be from Jan. 15 to 17 at SM City Iloilo while the Cebuana Lhullier Age Group Tennis Tournament will be held at the La Paz tennis court.
On Jan. 20 there will be a Dinagyang 20-Under Rapid Chess Tournament at the Office of the Congressman and the Dinagyang 50k Ultra Marathon from Molo, Iloilo City to Guimbal, Iloilo. Next day will be the Iloilo Dinagyang Run at SM City Iloilo.
The Mayor Joe III Espinosa Cup Dart Competition will be from Jan. 24 to 27 at Marymart mall, while scheduled from Jan. 26 to 27 were the Dinagyang Bastonero 2018 and the 11th Dinagyang National Age Group Swimfest at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
Other events from Jan. 27 to 28 were Dinagyang Auto Show at the Iloilo Business Park, Dinagyang Archery at the La Paz football field, 6th Pencak Silat Invitational at the Iloilo Science and Technology University, and the Regional Taekwondo Championship at the Western Institute of Technology covered gym.
“We use sports as a vehicle to promote a healthy and alert citizenry,” said Salomon. “Sports are also our way to discourage our youth from trying illegal drugs.”/PN
