MANILA – Sixteen players tracing their roots from Western Visayas were in the 2017-2018 PBA Philippine Cup, which formally opened last night at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Seven of them were from Iloilo, five from Bacolod City, and four from various parts of Negros Occidental.
Kiefer Ravena and Emman Monfort of Iloilo City and Raul Soyud of Negros Occidental were playing for NLEX Road Warriors.
Meralco Bolts’ Anjo Caram and Ken Bono were both Ilonggos while Reynel Hugnatan was from Bacolod City.
Jeffrei Chan, Justin Chua and Luis Alfonso “LA” Revilla – all from Bacolod City – were in Phoenix Fuel Masters.
Jericho Cruz of Iloilo and James Yap of Escalante City, Negros Occidental were in Rain or Shine Elasto Painters, while Kia Picanto had Ronald Tubid of Iloilo and Mark Yee of Negros Occidental.
Other Western Visayan players in the Philippine Cup were Barangay Ginebra San Miguel Kings’ Juan Paolo Taha of Iloilo, Alaska Aces’ Siverino Baclao of Bacolod City and Blackwater Elite’s rookie Raymar Jose of Pontevedra, Negros Occidental.
VETS LEFT IN THE COLD
With the entry of 22 rookies this season, a number of PBA veterans – including some star players – were not included in any lineup.
Among prominent players surprisingly left out were Jonas Villanueva and Carlo Lastimosa, who both last played for Road Warriors, and Danny Seigle, who was not renewed by TNT KaTropa.
Also without teams were Chris Ellis, Joseph Yeo, Kris Rosales, Chris Lutz, Mark Cardona, Dennis Miranda, John Wilson, Jeric Teng, Jason Deutchman, Josan Nimes, and Aaron Aban./PN
