KALIBO, Aklan – The number of Aklanons wanting to avail government scholarships for skills training and education continues to increase.
Dr. Julius Jamero, provincial director of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), said there are currently at least 19,000 pending scholarship applicants from the province’s 17 municipalities.
“Aklanons are eager to learn new skills,” he said.
About 3,000 new slots will be opened for recipients in Aklan this year.
Jamero said these 3,000 scholarships will be divided in different TESDA programs, including its Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP), Special Training for Employment Program (STEP) and Private Education Scholarship Financial Assistance (PESPA) as well as for TESDA farm schools and technology institutions.
For this year, Aklan has an allocation of about P19 million for TESDA programs in the province.
Meanwhile, about 700 new TESDA scholars attended their training induction program Friday.
The activity held in New Washington town aims to orient TESDA scholars of their responsibilities, said Jamero.
A career guidance seminar will also be conducted to help other scholars decide what field of courses to take, he added.
Among the scholars were out-of-school youths, farmers and fishermen, unemployed and underemployed, disadvantaged women and returning overseas Filipino workers, among others.
“Some drug surrenderees were also among the participants,” said Jamero, adding that they are being prioritized for TESDA projects.
He likewise said that the TESDA Emergency Skills Training Program, which prioritizes drug dependents as well, will be implemented in the province starting in June. (PNA)
