ILOILO City – Barely a week after a drug pushing suspect was killed in its capital town of San Jose, another one was slain in Antique province, this time in the municipality of Patnongon.

Police shot and killed the 38-year-old Rodney Ortea of Barangay Carit-an, Patnongon, who they claimed violently resisted arrest during an antidrug operation in the village.

Ortea sold a plastic pack of shabu to a police poseur buyer for P500 at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 23.

When the undercover officer was about to arrest him, Ortea drew out a revolver tucked in his waist and fired at other policemen serving as backup.

This prompted the officers to fire back, said Senior Inspector Janvier Gilza, chief of the Antique Police Provincial Office’s Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit.

One of the backup officers also kicked the motorcycle Ortea was riding during the transaction, causing the suspect to fall to the ground, said Gilza.

Ortea died of a gunshot wound on the left chest.

Three plastic packs of shabu, a black motorcycle, a .38 revolver with three live bullets, and a shell were recovered from the operation site.

According to Gilza, Ortea turned himself in to the police at the height of the government crackdown on drugs in 2016.

“We have been monitoring him (Ortea) since he surrender,” the police official said. “We conducted the operation when we learned that he returned to the drug trade.”

Ortea was the second drug suspect killed in a police operation in Antique in less than a week.

On Feb. 17 police also shot and killed the 34-year-old Johndelbert Monares of Barangay 4, San Jose when he tried to evade arrest in Barangay Madrangca in the capital town.

Monares, who was also a 2016 drug surrenderer, sold shabu to an undercover officer for P500, police said.

When he sensed that he was transacting with the police, Monares drew a .38 revolver and fired at the latter twice but missed.

That was when backup officers fired at Monares, hitting him on the left chest and temple.

Monares died while being taken to the Angel Salazar Memorial General Hospital, also in San Jose.

Six sachets of shabu and the revolver, loaded with five bullets, were recovered from the suspect. Police also seized his motorcycle and cellphone./PN
