ILOILO City – Millions of pesos worth of assorted jewelry and cash were stolen yesterday from a Chinese-owned jewelry store at a mall on Guanco Street.
The Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO) was looking into at least four robbers, all of whom managed to escape.
The burglary at Aljun jewelry store was discovered when Gaisano Guanco opened at around 8:30 a.m., police said, citing mall security guard Christopher Gumayao.
Among those taken were P10 million worth of jewelry items and P70,000 cash, the ICPO said.
Aljun jewelry store is owned by the 32-year-old Langlin Hu of this city.
At least four people carried out the robbery, initial investigation by the ICPO intelligence division led by Superintendent Allan Macapagal showed.
Two of them gained entry to the jewelry store by cutting a portion of the galvanized-iron roof, Macapagal said.
They took the vault, brought it to the Gaisano Guanco grocery section and divested it of its contents, he said.
A destroyed vault and an ax believed to have been used by the robbers were found at the grocery section.
“The security guard outside the mall, positioned near Aljun jewelry store failed to notice that something was happening,” said Macapagal.
Aljun jewelry store had two security cameras but these have been switched off.
The ICPO also learned from investigation that the robbers checked in at the Iloilo Corporate Inn behind the mall prior to the robbery.
One of them checked in on Feb. 18. The three others checked in the same room the following day. They paid for accommodation from Feb. 18 to 25, Macapagal said, citing hotel records.
Police swooped down on their hotel room but did not find anyone.
Citing witnesses, Macapagal said the robbers were Cebuano-speaking and originated from Cagayan de Oro.
They may have staged the robbery very early yesterday morning and fled thereafter, said Macapagal.
He believes the culprits had an Ilonggo accomplice. “Alam ko may contact sila dito na alam ang pasikot-sikot sa loob ng mall,” Macapagal said.
Investigation into the incident continues.
As of press time, police were still trying to retrieve security camera footage from the Iloilo Corporate Inn in a bid to identify the suspects./PN
