ILOILO City – Two boys drowned in a quarry pit in Barangay Cag-an, Anilao, Iloilo.
The 10-year-old Khayn Belarvo and nine-year-old Arjie Gemberva were both pupils of Cag-an Elementary School.
According to Anilao’s Police Office 1 Marvin Pojaga, around an hour prior to their drowning, the boys were seen bicycling at the quarry area around 5 p.m. on Monday.
Quarry site security guard Jennifer Amable warned them not to proceed further but they ignored her, said Pojaga.
Around 6 p.m. Amable saw the bicycle near the quarry pit. But the boys were nowhere in sight.
When Jay-R Gemberva, father of Arjie, learned that his son was missing, he looked for him until he saw two pairs of slippers floating in the quarry pit full of water.
The pit was some 14 feet deep.
A backhoe was used to retrieve the bodies.
“We could not establish if the boys deliberately jumped into the pit or they accidentally fell into it,” Pojaga told Panay News.
Black Mountain Mineral Resources and Development Corp. owned the quarry site./PN
