2 fatalities were recorded of dengue, leptospirosis in Bacolod City

BACOLOD City-The City Health Office (CHO) has recorded one death each of dengue and leptospirosis in a period from January to February of this year.

A record from the Epidemiological Surveillance Unit (BCESU) of the CHO, as of Feb.26 showed that there was also a drop in dengue cases in February compared to the same period last year.

The CHO- Environment Sanitation Division Chief Grace Tan said there were 33 dengue cases with only one fatality recorded in this city.

While, last year in the same period it reported 41 dengue cases with two deaths, showing a 19.5 percent drop in this year.

The CHO conducts a continuing campaign to combat dengue by encouraging Barangays to do enhanced 4S: Search and destroy mosquito breeding sites; secure self-protection measures; seek early consultation and Support fogging, Tan said.

Recorida and tri-media campaign, the distribution of larvicides, and spraying and fogging in barangays and public places are also being rolled out, she added.

Tan cited that barangays Singcang recorded the most number of cases with six, followed by Mansilingan, four; Granada, Cabug and Mandalagan with three dengue cases each; Alijis, Estefania and Banago, two; while, 14 and Tangub with one case each.

The Environment Sanitation Division Chief disclosed that a 48-year-old male expired of leptospiroses in a hospital here after he reportedly waded in flood water in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental after Super Typhoon Odette.

To prevent the spread of leptospirosis, the CHO is conducting the distribution of mouse traps, information drive regarding rodent control and management of leptospirosis, the availability of Doxycycline for prophylaxis of leptospirosis, and the campaign for proper solid waste management./PN
