ILOILO City – A pre-dawn clash between two youth gangs in Barangay Benedicto, Jaro district left two teenagers hurt yesterday.
They clashed just a few meters away from the Jaro police station.
Eighteen-year-old Christian Fortaleza of Barangay Tabuc Suba, Jaro was confined at the West Visayas State University Medical Center.
The other teen, 17, was allowed to go home after his bruises were treated.
Fortaleza and his minor companion were members of Pinoy Thug Society (RTS) while their attackers belonged to Thank You God Always (TYGA) gang led by a certain Ar-ar, according to Inspector Ronaldo Amihan of the Jaro police station.
The gangs clashed around 2:20 a.m. TYGA had around 10 members armed with steel pipes. Fortaleza, his minor companion and two other members of PTS were outnumbered.
Fortaleza was stabbed on the waist. His 17-year-old friend was beaten with a steel pipe.
Amihan said the police already identified five of the 10 TYGA members. All were residents of Barangay Benedicto, he said.
“We are preparing the charges against the suspects but we will also be coordinating with their parents. Most of them were minors,” said Amihan.
Gang-related violence has been bugging the city in recent months. The ICPO counted at least 25 gangs. Most of the members were minors.
The gangs that the ICPO identified were spread out in five districts – City Proper, La Paz and Lapuz, Mandurriao, Molo./PN
