CEBU City – At least 20 vessels are joining the fluvial procession of the image of the Señor Santo Niño de Cebu this morning.

The fluvial procession will be from Mandaue City to Pier 1 in this city.

Mariners were informed that the entire Mactan channel will be closed to all sea vessels starting this dawn until the procession ends, said Dionlett Ampil, commander of the Philippine Coast Guard Cebu Station.

Security and safety measures — including the ban on firearms, fireworks and balloons — will be strictly enforced during the event, Ampil said.

Marshals on speed boats will also be deployed for a quick response during emergencies, especially if a participating vessel sinks, he said.

But Ampil said the holding of the fluvial procession will largely depend on the weather.

“If the sea gets rough, we will have to cancel the fluvial procession for the sake of the safety of participants,” he said.

Church officials said a motorcade from Mandaue City to Cebu City will be held if the fluvial procession is cancelled. (PNA)
