SAN JOSE, Antique – Some 200 volunteers joined the cleanup of esteros, or canals, in this capital town and Sibalom.
The quarterly cleanup over the weekend was a project of the Environment Management Bureau (EMB).
At least 29 sacks were filled with garbage. They weighed a total of 421 kilos.
Among the participants were Reserve Officers Training Corps students of St. Anthony’s College and University of Antique Sibalom campus.
The cleaned the EMB’s adopted esteros at the Bagumbayan Creek in Barangay 8 here and the National Irrigation Administration’s canals in Districts 3 and 4 in Sibalom.
At the Bagumbayan Creek, village councils of barangays 5 and 8 cleared the clogged canal.
Students of Antique National School and employees of the Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in Belison joined, too.
EN Rice Mill and Kahasan Ice Plant donated the sacks used as waste receptacles, while Gaisano Grand Mall of Antique, Alex Liao of Greenwich and Pinnacle Suites brought snacks and bottled water for the cleaners.
Aside from declogging canals, the quarterly cleanup aims to minimize air and water pollution and eliminate foul odor emanating from the esteros.
EMB’s Senior Environmental Management Specialist Josephine Maguad noted they gathered less garbage this time.
“Maybe our citizens are becoming more aware of the hazards of throwing garbage just anywhere,” said Maguad. “Also, tropical storm ‘Marce’ may have ‘drowned’ all the wastes thrown into the sea, but our marine life will have to bear the brunt.” (PNA)
