ILOILO – The Provincial Epidemiology Surveillance Unit (PESU) is investigating a suspected food poisoning in San Dionisio town.
Forty-two students from Nicomedes R. Tubar Sr. National High School and Hacienda Conchita National High School fell ill on Sunday.
They suffered from diarrhea, according to Ziforah Sotomil of PESU, which is under the Provincial Health Office.
The students were participants of the three-day Barkada Kontra Droga camping in Dumangas town from Jan. 12-14. They were taken to the Dumangas District Hospital after complaining of stomach pains in the afternoon of Jan. 13.
A catering service allegedly provided them with pork and corn as viand for lunch.
Barkada Kontra Droga was a peer-based preventive education and information program to counter the spread of illegal drugs.
Yesterday morning, all the students were sent home. As of this writing, PESU was waiting for the list of patients from the district hospital.
PESU would check on the symptoms the students exhibited to determine whether this was really food poisoning or not, said Sotomil.
The Barkada Kontra Droga encampment featured a symposium on the ill-effects of illegal drugs, a literary-musical contest and a female and male beauty pageant.
Some 4,000 participants, mostly junior and senior high school students, were at the camp. (PNA)
