ILOILO City – The Philippine Crop Insurance Corp. (PCIC) has allotted P76 million to indemnify farmers affected by three storms that consecutively hit parts of Western Visayas last month and this January.
PCIC acting regional manager Eva Ulie Laud said tropical storms “Urduja”, “Vinta” and “Agaton” damaged 11,054 hectares of farmland and displaced 12, 600 farmers in the region.
A total of 7,966 farmers in the provinces of Aklan, Antique, Capiz, Iloilo, and Negros Occidental affected by “Urduja” and “Vinta” would be getting some P51 million.
The two storms destroyed 7,054 hectares of farmland, said Laud.
On the other hand, P25 million would be given to 4,634 farmers in Aklan, Capiz and northern Iloilo that “Agaton” displaced.
The storm damaged 4,000 hectares of farmland.
PCIC is an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture mandated to provide insurance protection to the country’s agricultural producers, particularly the subsistence farmers, against crop losses arising from natural calamities such as typhoons, floods, drought, earthquakes, and volcanic eruption.
It also provides insurance protection to farmers whose crops are affected by plant diseases and pests.
“We have mobilized adjusters to assess the damage,” said Laud.
Each farmer could receive an average compensation of P6,500 per hectare.
To date, about 290,000 farmers and fisherfolk in the region are listed in PCIC’s Registry System for Basic Sectors in Agriculture.
Last year, Laud said, they were able to extend P330 million assistance to 55,000 farmers in the region.
This year, PCIC has P3.7-billion indemnity fund covering 290,000 insured farmers and fisherfolk in the region.
Laud encouraged more farmers and even fisherfolk to register with PCIC so they could avail themselves of indemnity.
