BACOLOD City – Around 45 international youth basketball teams are expected to arrive in this city for the World Youth Championship (WYC) basketball tournament, slated from December 13 to 16.
The exact venue is still being finalized, according to Nathaniel Salanga, the Bacolod-born founder of WYC, which is based in Singapore.
Each team will be composed of all-boys players aged 10 years and under.
In addition to the international squads, about 30 local teams will also join the competition.
Salanga said the event aims to bring together youth basketball teams from around the world in a friendly and competitive environment that promotes sportsmanship, cultural exchange, and grassroots sports development — all while showcasing Bacolod as a host city.
“The WYC offers international exposure for young athletes, giving them the opportunity to play against top teams from Asia and beyond, enhancing their skills and boosting their confidence,” he said.
He added that the tournament also serves as a platform for scouts and coaches to discover promising young talents.
More than just a sports event, the WYC will also foster global cultural exchange. Young players will have the chance to meet peers from different cultures and form friendships that transcend borders.
“Competing in an international event not only strengthens players’ resumes but also inspires them to aim higher,” he added.
As a proud Bacoleño, Salanga emphasized that hosting such a prestigious event will shine a spotlight on Bacolod’s readiness for the global stage.
“This event breaks the norm of hosting major tournaments only in capital cities. It proves that provinces like Bacolod can also rise and take center stage,” he said.
The tournament is also expected to uplift community pride and give Bacolod international recognition, positioning the city on the global sports map.
Salanga noted the economic impact of the event, with families, officials, and supporters expected to boost activity in local hotels, restaurants, and businesses.
