KALIBO, Aklan – Fifty-two barangays in the province have been cleared of illegal drugs, an intelligence officer of the Aklan Police Provincial Office said.
From 214, the number of drug-affected barangays dropped to 162, according to Chief Inspector Bernard Ufano, Provincial Intelligence Branch head.
The province has a total of 327 barangays.
Several slightly affected villagers were awaiting validation reports from Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils.
Before the Philippine National Police launched Oplan Double Barrel on July 1, drug-affected barangays in Aklan were only 97 (as of June 30).
In less than five months, almost 1,900 self-confessed users and/or pushers in 214 barangays surrendered to the authorities.
On Nov. 9 a drug suspect was also killed in a police antidrug operation in Barangay Argao, Malay.
Community-based rehabilitation programs supported by stakeholders, local government units and the private sector are ongoing, Ufano said.
Drug dependents are assessed by the municipal health offices and classified as seriously, moderately or slightly affected before they undergo rehab.
In New Washington an initial batch of drug yielders is being trained under a livelihood program.
Ufano disclosed the capitol is also keen on putting up a drug rehabilitation center in Madalag.
By the end of December the Police Regional Office 6 will assess the antidrug accomplishments of municipal police stations. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
