ILOILO City – Eight manufacturers and dealers of firecrackers are seeking exemption from the Work Stoppage Order for manufacturing and selling firecrackers issued by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).
DOLE Region 6 identified the applicants as William Andres and Rowena Geia who are into firecracker manufacturing and registered under the AGE Pyrotechnics from Barangay Sooc, Arevalo district; and six retailers – Iloilo Society Commercial, Tagbac Pioneers, Custodio Fireworks, One Fireworks, Pick-up Shop, and Sentak Merchandising.
According to Michael Gison, senior labor and employment officer of DOLE-6, these applicants will be evaluated by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP).
If compliant with safety standards, their applications for exemption will be endorsed to the DOLE secretary for appropriate action.
According to Gison, the Work Stoppage Order is not a “total ban” on firecrackers.
“It is more on the strict implementation of the rules and safety standards of the PNP and BFP,” he explained.
Gison said a livelihood assistance of not more than P10,000 will be extended by DOLE to each of those displaced by the Work Stoppage Order.
DOLE issued the order following a series of recent firecracker-related explosions in Bulacan province.
Secretary Silvestre Bello III noted the “existence of grave and imminent danger to the health and safety of workers in the workplace involved in the production of pyrotechnics and firecrackers.” (PNA)
