ILOILO City – The public may now check out learning materials on disaster preparedness at the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Information and Exhibit Center.
Dubbed “Kabalaka Gallery,” the center is at the Art Deck Building of the John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University in Molo district.
“Kabakala” is an acronym that stand for “Kahublagan sa Barangay para sa Lapnagon nga Kahandaan sa Kalamidad.”
In Hiligaynon, kabalaka also means “concern.”
Information and education materials at the gallery are produced by the West Visayas State University College of Communication.
Among them are flyers and audio-video materials with particular focus on assisting vulnerable groups during disasters.
Touted as the one of its kind in the Philippines, it is a city government initiative under the Community-Based Adaptation and Resiliency Against Disasters II Project, with CITYNET Yokohama Project Office, Yokohama City and Japan International Cooperation Agency as supporters.
“We are now more focused on preparedness, prevention and mitigation measures on disasters, calamities and hazards,” said Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog. “We can definitely say we are better prepared and more cooperative and united in our response to unfortunate events.” (PNA)
