BACOLOD City – Eighty-seven drug surrenders in this city completed an eight-week, 24-session community-based rehabilitation (CBR) program.
The 87 were part of the initial 105 surrenderers who attended the sessions.
These 105 were part of the 473 drug surrenderers referred for CBR. The City Health Office conducted the drug testing and screening.
A total of 135 were assessed as “severe” and were referred for admission to regular rehabilitation centers.
The Bacolod City Anti-Drug Abuse Council conceptualized a barangay-based holistic rehabilitation and transformation program using the components of initial rehabilitation, consolidation and integration and continuous prevention.
This uses the bayanihan concept of harnessing volunteerism and stimulating Filipino ingenuity and collaboration of the different agencies (the City Health Office, Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Interior and Local Government, Bacolod City Police Office, among others).
The CBR program modules adopted the 12-Steps Program of Narcotics Anonymous.
The remaining surrenderers will be part of succeeding batches for rehabilitation.
There are currently 44 Department of Health (DOH)-accredited treatment and rehabilitation centers in the country.
Last month, DOH and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a 1.85-billion yen (P826 million) program to establish and enhance facilities and rehabilitation as well as treatment protocols of drug dependents in the Philippines.
Dubbed as “Consolidated Rehabilitation on Illegal Drug Users (CARE), the program aims to provide an opportunity for drug dependents to reduce the risk of relapse, walk through a path or recovery and integrate them back into society,” said Health secretary Paulyn Ubial. (PIA-Negros Occidental/PN)
