MANILA – Dumangas, Iloilo native Ariana Dormitorio bested her contenders in the 2017 Asian Mountain Bike Invitational and Philippine National Championship in Danao, Cebu.
The 19-year-old showed her abilities in climbing and technical section mastery as she outpaced her rivals and captured the gold medal that came with the Philippine National Champion title on Sunday.
Thailand’s Nuntana Supaksorn and 2014 Asia Continental Championship Female Junior gold medalist Warinothorn Phetpraparn brought home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Meanwhile Taiwan’s Zi Yen Chen and Yu Shuang Yeh landed on fourth and fifth places, respectively.
“Ariana’s victory today goes a long way in raising her UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) world ranking due to the high points awarded to the national champion,” Dormitorio’s father and head coach Donjie said in a radio interview.
A few months ago, Dormitorio turned out as the overall champion in the first leg of the 2017 Asian Mountain Bike Series in Yawatahama, Japan after topping the Under-23 and Elite Divisions.
Dormitorio, who was recognized by the Philippine Sportswriters Association early this year for her feats in 2016, hopes to continue her winning ways in the 2017 Asian MTB Series when it resumes in August in Malaysia.
Since there will be no motorbiking in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, Dormitorio will instead prepare for the two legs of the World Cup Under-23 category and the World Championships Under-23 in Australia. (Adrian Stewart Co/PN)
