KALIBO, Aklan – The Sangguniang Panlalawigan declared the period 2017 to 2027 a “decade of action for road safety” in a bid to curb the rise in vehicular accidents in Aklan.
The declaration was contained in Resolution No. 2017-390, authored by Provincial Board member Nemesio Neron, which also sought a summit on risk reduction in roads and traffic management on July 25.
The provincial government wants to reduce road crash fatalities by 50 percent over the next five years.
Road crash deaths rose to 44 in 2016 from 12 in 2015, latest data showed.
In 2015, Aklan recorded 475 vehicle accidents, 227 of which involved physical injuries while 236 caused damage to properties.
The numbers increased to 1,883 in 2016, with 959 resulting to physical injuries and 880, damaged properties.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), road crashes are the leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 29 years old. Without sustained action, it can be the seventh cause of death in 2030.
The WHO, in partnership with the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration, also declared the “decade of action for road safety” from 2011 to 2020.
