MANILA – NLEX managed a double-overtime win against Rain or Shine last night 122-114 to sustain its strong start in the Governors’ Cup.
Trailing 112-111 in the second extension, Road Warriors drained 9 straight points courtesy of Kevin Alas, import Aaron Fuller and Larry Fonacier to pull away for good.
Fuller led with 33 points and 20 rebounds for NLEX to move to solo first place 3-0. Alas posted 24 points and 10 rebounds, while JR Quinahan and Fonacier chipped in 13 and 11 points, respectively.
It was also head coach Yeng Guiao’s first win against Elasto Painters, which he handled for six years, since moving to NLEX at the start of the season.
“Our chemistry is getting better, our import is clicking in our system,” said Guiao. “But a 3-0 start this conference does not make us a contender yet. We still have to face the tougher teams down the stretch.”
It was a seesaw battle the entire match, with both teams tasting 5- to 9-point leads. Painters had two opportunities to go for the win but Chris Tiu and James Yap missed their game-winning attempts.
Import JD Weatherspoon led the way with 20 points, while Beau Belga and Negrense Yap added 15 and 14 points, respectively, for Painters (1-1)./PN
