KALIBO, Aklan – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) created the Task Force Boracay Challenge for tourism sustainability in Boracay.
Environmental Management Bureau regional director Ariel Gloria said the task force had already formulated action plans to address problems in the island.
The task force on July 13 conducted a lecture workshop with barangay officials of Manoc-manoc, Caticlan, Kabulihan, Yapak, and Balabag to discuss effective measures in implementing the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
Plans, ordinances, policies, and resolutions including the 10-year solid waste management plan and the comprehensive land use and master development plan in the island were also reviewed by the task force from July 26 to 28.
Environment secretary Roy Cimatu on June 22 urged local officials to address land and water waste management in the province.
Cimatu also accepted the “Boracay Challenge” that aims to save the island resort from the disadvantages of large-scale tourism and development.
DENR reactivated its Community Environment and Natural Resources Office in the island to enforce environmental laws.
The Environment department also gave the Malay municipal government a deadline to clean up the material recovery facility in Barangay Manoc-manoc.
