BACOLOD City – A landmark lighting ceremony will be held at the Bacolod City Government Center at 7 p.m. today.
The city was chosen as one of the 76 local government units in the country to join the Association of Southeast Asian Nation (ASEAN) in its 50th regional anniversary through the simultaneous lighting ceremony.
A 6-foot fiberglass lantern will be lighted and a street party will follow.
About 1,000 students from elementary and secondary schools in the city will sing the ASEAN anthem and hymn.
They were from Rizal Elementary School, Hervias National High School, Corazon Locsin Montelibano Elementary School, Montevista Elementary School, Bacolod City National High School, Alfredo Montelibano Elementary School, Lopez Jaena Elementary School, Mabini Elementary School, Education and Training Center School I, II and III.
“We want them to feel that they are part of the ASEAN,” said Mayor Evelio Leonardia.
The event is organized by the city hall and the Department of Education.
“We must position Bacolod to prepare for the ASEAN integration. [It] could provide us opportunities. Our people must be ready for new realities,” Leonardia said.
The event will be broadcasted live on television and social media, said event director Eli Francis Tajanlangit.
