MANILA – Gilas Pilipinas bucked a slow start to score 98-66 against Malaysia in the 29th Southeast Asian Games at the MABA Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.
Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger made 18 points and 18 rebounds for the Philippine national men’s basketball team, which swept its Group A assignment with a 3-0 win-loss record.
Kobe Paras chipped in 16 points while Kiefer Ravena and Jeth Troy Rosario made 12 points apiece for the Philippines, which won Wednesday night even with Baser Amer and Carl Bryan Cruz ejected.
Gilas opened the match 9-2 behind Standhardinger’s inside hits. Malaysia responded with a huge run to snatch a 20-15 lead before Paras trimmed it to 18-20.
Malaysians continued to lead early in the second quarter but Gilas pulled away on 3-point conversions by Amer, Almond Vosotros and Kevin Ferrer for a 37-25 lead at the half.
Tensions arose between the teams in the third frame. Ferrer and Malaysia’s Kuek Tian Yuan got tangled in one play, sparking a commotion that led to the ejection of Amer and Cruz.
This did not stop Gilas from keeping the lead wide. Conversions from Ravena, Ferrer and Rosario allowed them to build their largest lead at 31.
Gilas will face either Vietnam or Singapore in the knockout semifinals today. The championship match will be tomorrow./PN
