MANILA – Star Hotshots kept its unbeaten record in the 2017 Oppo PBA Governors’ Cup with a 100-81 victory over Phoenix Fuel Masters at the SM Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
Import Malcolm Hill led the way with 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists for Hotshots, which kept its hold of the top spot in the standings with a perfect 4-0 win-loss record after Wednesday night’s game.
Paul Lee chipped in with 18 points, including four 3-point conversions, while Aldrech Ramos contributed 13 points for Star, which played without Gilas Pilipinas guard Jio Jalalon.
“It’s total team effort. I’m proud of the way we played defense,” said head coach Chito Victolero. “We prepared hard for this game because we had a 19-day break.”
Star went to an early lead on hits by Hill and Ramos. Fuel Masters responded with its own rally for a 42-all deadlock but hits from Lee and Mark Barroca gave Hotshots a 49-44 halftime advantage.
Hotshots started pulling far away from Phoenix in the third behind consecutive points by Hill. Fuel Masters tried to keep it close on back-to-back treys by RJ Jazul but Star got its own shots to extend the lead 77-64.
In the fourth frame, Hotshots went for the kill on 3-pointers by Lee and perimeter shots by Allein Maliksi to build its largest lead 100-80 on a 3-point play by Rafael Reavis.
Import Brandon Brown top-scored with 33 points and 23 rebounds while Negrense Jeffrei Chan added 14 markers for Fuel Masters, which lost its last five games after a 2-0 start in the conference./PN
