MANILA – Chooks-To-Go Gilas Pilipinas turned to Kiefer Ravena in the second half to score a come-from-behind 73-65 win over BC Astana of Kazakhstan in the FIBA Asia Champions Cup in Chenzhou, China.
Trailing by as much as 8 points at the half, Ravena anchored a huge run by Gilas to open the third quarter on Friday night and tie the count at 51-all. Triples from Ravena and Jeric Teng pushed Gilas 57-55 heading into the fourth.
After Gilas built its largest lead 65-57 early in the final frame following conversions from Isaiah Austin and Anton Manuel, Astana countered with a rally to come to within 63-65.
But 3 straight points by Bacolodnon LA Revilla increased Gilas’ lead 70-63. After the Kazakhs made their last push to come to within 5, Ravena came up with a layup and a free throw to seal the victory.
The former Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles star finished with 22 points – 11 in the third quarter – to go along with three rebounds and two assists for the Chot Reyes-mentored team.
American center Austin made his Gilas debut with 17 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks while Manuel contributed 10 markers, including two 3-point conversions.
Gilas was facing next Sarreyet Ramallah of Palestine (the game was ongoing as of press time on Saturday night). It is also taking on Mono Vampire of Thailand – led by Filipino-American Jason Brickman – at 2:30 p.m. today.
Dmitri Gavrilov led BC Astana with 11 points while Anthony Clemmons and Justin Carter chipped in with 10 markers apiece./PN
