MANILA – FIDE Master Sander Severino captured his third gold medal in men’s chess at the 9th ASEAN Para Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
The native of Silay City, Negros Occidental teamed up with Henry Lopez and Felix Aguilera on Friday night to amass 9.5 points – a point ahead of Indonesia’s Maksum Firdaus, Azhar Panjaitan and Sutikno – and conquer the team rapid event.
Earlier, Severino, 32, won gold in the individual event and another in team standard, where he teamed up with Lopez. He also won bronze in single rapid.
Severino was the third Filipino Para Games squad member to take at least three gold medals. Others were teenage sprint phenom Cielo Honasan and thrower Cendy Asusano.
Participating in the Para Games for the first time, the 27-year-old Asusano registered 5.50m to snare the shot put F54 gold, her third after winning javelin last Monday and discus throw last Thursday.
Ernie Gawilan, meanwhile, struck gold in the 200m individual medley SM8 after tallying 2:50.13, ahead of Malaysia’s James Wong Tien Yu (2:50.98) and Vietnam’s Dang Van Cong (3:20.05).
The Philippine wheelchair basketball team – Juanito Mingarine, Marcos Rabasto Jr., Alfie Cabanog, Rene Macabenguil, and Marlon Nacita – captured bronze after defeating Myanmar 49-41.
It was Mingarine’s second bronze medal as he, Rabasto, Macabenguil, Cleford Trocino, and John Rey Escalante survived Laos 12-11 to pocket the 3-on-3 bronze earlier.
With a day to go before the close of the competition, the Philippines is still on fifth place with 19 gold, 18 silver and 21 bronze medals./PN
