ROXAS City – Two Rapid Emergency Telecommunications Teams (RETTs) were formed after a two-day emergency telecommunications cluster summit in the city.
The summit was held at the Gerry Roxas Foundation, Inc. Center in Barangay Dayao on Sept. 21 to 22.
The summit also facilitated the drafting of the RETTs’ operations manual that wills sever as thei reference before, during and after emergencies and disasters.
“Experience has shown that effective response depends fundamentally on two factors which are information and resources,” Office of Civil Defense Region 6 (OCD-6) director Rosario Cabrera said.
Cabrera added that the OCD-6 and the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council faced difficulties during operations due to communication in the wake of typhoon Yolanda.
Each of the RETT is composed of a team leader, an assistant team leader, radio operators, electronics and special equipment specialists, information technology experts, a satellite operator, system support specialists, radio frequency managers, and a public information officer.
The RETTs will provide assistance to the local disaster risk reduction and management office to ease its coordination with the regional council.
The summit discussed the importance of compatibility, interoperability, commonality, and the institutionalization of information and communications technology for an effective disaster management program.
The summit also addressed the communications, electronics and information needs of the emergency operations centers, or the incident command posts, in a disaster area for command control and mechanism. (PIA/PN)
