KALIBO, Aklan – Police warned the public of tricycle drivers who rob their passengers at night.
On Sept. 30, police arrested the 20-year-old Sweet Ham Mendiguetti of Davao City in an entrapment operation around 3 p.m. in Sitio Ilaya, Barangay Mabilo, New Washington, Aklan.
Police accused Mendiguetti, a tricycle driver, of having hand on two robberies on Sept. 29.
His first victim was a woman, who requested anonymity, walking along Sector 2 in Barangay Mabilo around 7 p.m., a police report showed.
Mendiguetti offered the woman a ride but the latter declined.
A few minutes later, Mendiguetti hit the woman with his tricycle from behind and took her bag away.
The woman, already injured, tried to fight back and was able to escape, police said.
The second victim was the 20-year-old Amor Shielo Solano of Barangay Aquino, Ibajay, Aklan.
Solano took a tricycle ride on Quezon Avenue in Barangay Andagao in this capital town around 9 p.m., a police report showed.
She was on her way to a fast-food restaurant where she works, police said.
Mendiguetti told Solano that he needed to urinate so they stopped at the Calachuchi Road near the Kalibo Municipal Cemetery.
Solano said she sensed danger and decided to run. That was when Mendiguetti grabbed her hand and declared holdup, the report further stated.
Mendiguetti punched Solano on the nose and took away her cellular phone and a purse containing P900 cash.
Solano added that Mendiguetti tried to sexually assault her but she managed to escape.
“Sinipa ko siya sa hita at natumba ang suspek. Tumakbo ako at humingi ng tulong sa labas ng sementeryo,” Solano narrated.
Bystanders helped Solano and reported to the Kalibo police station.
The police identified Mendiguetti and his tricycle unit through footages of closed circuit television cameras from a gasoline station and a disco bar along Quezon Avenue.
Police Officer 2 Eric John de Lemos of Kalibo police station’s theft and robbery section said they coordinated with Mabilo barangay officials to catch Mendiguetti.
Mendigeutti was detained at the police station’s lockup facility pending the filing of charges against him, police said. (Aklan Forum Journal/PN)
