ILONGGO marathoners are expected to converge to the Iloilo Business Park in Mandurriao, Iloilo City this morning for the Iloilo qualifying leg of the 41st edition of the National Milo Marathon.
The race will start at 3 a.m. with the top three finishers in men’s and women’s full marathon race earning a qualification to the 42-kilometer national finals in Cebu on Dec. 3.
According to Milo Philippines Sports executive Robbie de Vera, they are expecting another successful hosting by Iloilo City, just like the national finals last year at the Iloilo Sports Complex.
“Iloilo City served as a great host for the Milo Marathon National Finals last year,” de Vera said. “We are thankful to Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog and Vice Mayor Joe Espinosa for once again agreeing to host this year.”
The rest of the qualifying races will be in General Santos on Oct. 15, Davao on Oct. 22, Butuan on Nov. 12, and Cagayan de Oro on Nov. 19.
After the marathon, there will be a cheerdance competition among Iloilo City schools.
Jalandoni Memorial School, Cubay Elementary School and F. Java Kelly Elementary School are joining the elementary division.
Iloilo City National High School, Mandurriao National High School and Jaro National High School are composing the secondary division while the college division comprises University of Iloilo and West Visayas State University.
“This is an added attraction to entertain our Ilonggo runners after the marathon. I am sure they will like it,” said Rommel Castro, head of Iloilo City government Sports Development Division.
Aside from keeping its commitment to help promote sports, the Milo Marathon will also resume its “Help Give Shoes” program.
Under the program, the organizers helped around 70,000 children with their donation of brand-new pairs of running shoes last year./PN
