BACOLOD City – There are 590 cases of Human Immunodeficiency Virus and Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (HIV and AIDS) in Negros Occidental, according to the City Health Office (CHO).
Out of this number, 300 are in this capital city, said Dr. Babylin Drilon, head of the social hygiene clinic of the CHO.
The figures were based on the CHO records covering the period January 2007 to October 2017 from people aged 18 to 62 years old.
Drilon said HIV and AIDS were mostly transmitted through male-to-male sexual intercourse of people aged 25 to 34 years old.
In Western Visayas, Negros Occidental has the second highest number of HIV and AIDS cases next to Iloilo province, based on the records of the Department of Health.
Drilon said Iloilo has more than 700 cases of HIV and AIDS.
The CHO, together with the LGBT group Bana-ag, regularly conducts free HIV testing in barangays to prevent the infections from spreading, said Drilon.
Lectures are also conducted to educate the public about the dynamics of HIV and AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases, Drilon added.
Drilon advised the public to observe ABCDE, an acronym that stands for Abstain from sex, Be faithful to your partner, Correct and consistent condom use, Do not drink too much alcohol or don’t do drugs, Early diagnosis and treatment or educate yourself./PN
