BACOLOD City – Militant groups under the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan in Negros Island (Bayan-Negros) held a “cultural march” from the provincial capitol to Rizal Park as their way to commemorate the independence of Negros Island.
The march – dubbed Al Cinco de Noviembre – was conducted yesterday.
More than 700 members of different progressive organizations joined the afternoon march that ended with a cultural show at Rizal Park.
According to Bayan-Negros secretary-general Michael Concepcion, they recognize the contribution of the landlords in liberating the Negros Island from Spaniards.
But Concepcion said the struggles of real revolutionaries – the peasants and farmers – must also be given importance.
Concepcion added that peasant revolutionaries led by Dionesio Seguela, or Papa Isio, were never given due recognition.
After the liberation from colonizers, Concepcion claimed that “new masters” took hold of most of the landholdings in the province, which is why few families own large portions of land today.
“Today we commemorate the Negros independence through culture and arts to educate Negrenses of real history,” Concepcion added./PN
