BACOLOD City – The provincial government denied that the returning soldiers from Maraw City were “poorly treated” during a ceremonial heroes’ welcome at the provincial capitol.
The 81 soldiers were members of the 31st Division Recon Company of the Philippine Army’s 3rd Infantry Division, which served as a “blocking force and support” for the troopers who were on the main battlefield fighting against local terrorists.
Reports circulated on social media that the soldiers were “insulted” after they were served with canned sardines as viand during the affair’s “boodle fight.”
Negros Occidental governor Alfredo Marañon said the canned sardines were only served upon the suggestion of 303rd Infantry Brigade commander Colonel Eliezer Losañes, who was also present at the ceremony.
According to Marañon, Losañes said adding the canned sardines to the boodle fight will make the soldiers remember their hardships during the almost five-month war.
Marañon added that the reports in social media were “unfair” as it only focused on the canned sardines and not on other dishes that were served at the ceremony, like beef, pork and chicken.
Meanwhile, Provincial Planning and Development Office head Marylyn Sanogal said, “Ang Mambukal food for [the] boodle fight were pancit, adobo and calamansi juice, and may packed lunch nga beef, chicken, dessert, and juice for the families and other guests. Ginpadala man sa troops ang sobra.”/PN
