MANILA – Head coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes was already envisioning the Gilas Pilipinas lineup for the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which the Philippines will cohost with Japan and Indonesia. Among the players in his “wish list” were brothers Kiefer and Thirdy Ravena, as well as De La Salle University Green Archers standout Ricci Rivero.
“Ricci (Rivero) is one of the best players out there,” the national men’s basketball team mentor said in an online interview.
Other players Reyes plans to get on board are UAAP and NCAA stars Isaac Go, Jaymar Perez, Robert Bolick, Leonard Santillan, and Andrei Caracut, and high school players Kai Sotto, Raven Cortez and AJ Edu.
Reyes also hopes to tap the services of PBA’s Terrence Romeo and Roger Pogoy, as well as Abu Tratter, Kobe Paras and Isiah Austin, who could serve as Gilas’ naturalized player.
“I also want the smarts and size of Santillan,” Reyes said. “They should get experience from Gilas early so they will be ready come the 2023 FIBA World Cup.”
The FIBA Central Board on Saturday night have the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia the hosting rights for the tournament over the dual bid of Argentina and Paraguay.
It will be the second time for the Philippines and Japan to host the world basketball championship since 1978 and 2006, respectively. This will be the first time for Indonesia.
As incentive for cohosting, Philippine, Indonesian and Japanese teams were automatically qualified to the world tournament, whose 2023 edition is the first World Cup to be hosted by multiple nations./PN
